Calouste Gulbenkian: Medals & Plaquettes
Figueriredo, M. R. Medals and Plaquettes. The Calouste Gulbenkian Collection. Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Portugal, 2004. 165 pages, illustrated throughout. Casebound. This is a second publication produced by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in this series. The first was published in 1979 by Maria Teresa Gomes Ferreira and Maria Isabel Pereira Coutinho, which only included the medals of the Italian Renaissance. Now twenty-five years later, the study has been resumed and this new book lists in detail, not only the medals of the Italian Renaissance, but also an important set of French medals and plaquettes of the 19th and 20th centuries, incorporating the work of some of the best engravers and medalists at the time and also those of René Lalique. The text was written by Maria Rosa Figueiredo, the curator responsible for European Sculpture at the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection, who has also organised, studied and classified this section.
