EGYPT & SUDAN MEDAL, 1882-1889, dated reverse, single clasp, Alexandria 11th July (J. A. Long. S. B. Stewd HMS Inflexible), officially engraved. Toned, just a few light contact marks from star, otherwise extremely fine. John Arthur Long, was born on the 2nd April, 1849, at Portsea, Hants. Sold with copy service papers and copy roll mention for this entitlement as Sick Berth Steward aboard the HMS Inflexible. His notes also indicate that he died in 1883 during his time aboard Inflexible - his service notes marked 'D.D. on leave'. As part of Admiral Seymour's armada sent to bombard Alexandria in 1882 (a key incident in the British takeover of Egypt and the Suez Canal) she maintained a deliberate and well-aimed fire at the city defences. Inflexible's 16-inch guns methodically pounded the rebel-held harbor forts into submission, and Inflexible herself was hit by two 10-inch shells, wounding a handful of crewmen.
