Guide to British and Irish Printed Books
Manville, H. E. Numismatic Guide to British and Irish Printed Books 1600-2004. Encyclopaedia of British Numismatics Volume III. London, 2005. Quarto, pp. xi, (1), 291 pages. Casebound in cloth. This is the third volumes (fourth book) in the ‘Encyclopaedia of British Numismatics’ series. It lists selected printed books, as well as booklets, pamphlets, and pre-1950 offprints and reprints of articles which appeared in Encyclopaedia Vol. 2, but which have a separately-printed title or cover page to the original. The purpose of the volume is two-fold. The principal one, as the title suggests, is as a guide for researchers. The worth of entries varies considerably, from lightweight nineteenth century beginner books of minor interest to more comprehensive, authoritative titles. Most post-1950 general guides have been omitted, as have most ‘coffee-table’ type picture books. A second purpose is to notify bibliophile collectors of known published books, booklets and pamphlets that may be sought out. The work covers British and Irish publications with the understanding that, as with previous volumes in the series, ‘Irish’ applies to pre-republican Ireland – principally early eighteenth century publications around the time of the Swift-Woods controversy. Also, militaria per se does not fit into the organisation of this reference series, although a few books which also include commemorative medals have been included. Similarly, banknotes are only noted when they accompany coins or commemorative medals in a publication.
