Curtis, V S., Askari, M E., Pendleton E J., Hodges, R. & Safi, A-A. Sasanian Coins. A Sylloge of the Sasanian Coins in the National Museum of Iran (Muzeh Melli Iran), Tehran. Volume 1. Ardashir I – Hormizd IV. Royal Numismatic Society Special Publication No. 47. London, 2010. Quarto, pp. (9), 102 b/w plates all with descriptive text. Cloth, jacket.
In the last few decades, Sasanian numismatics have attracted much scholarly attention, and as a result many books, articles and electronic publications have emerged. This present volume records the coins from Ardashir I (AD 224-241) to the end of Horizd IV (AD 579-590) in the Department of Coins and Seals in the National Museum of Iran.
However, it does not include a sizeable bulk of confiscated material, which was not traditionally part of the Department of Coins and Seals of the Museum. It also omits a handful of coins too badly corroded to allow identification. The publication of a second volume consisting of around 2,500 coins from Khusrau II to the end of the Sasanian dynasty is currently being prepared.
