How to bid with Baldwin's
BIDDING AT OUR AUCTIONS couldn't be easier and we offer a variety of methods to all our customers. If you are at all unsure about how to bid with us then please call or email us and one of our auction team will be on hand to help you.
Bidding in person
Admission to the auction room and participation is free once you have a copy of the catalogue which will be available at no cost if you attend the auction in person. To bid in person at any of our sales (both in the UK and internationally) you will need to register for a bidding number; members of our team will be on hand at the registration table outside the auction room to take your details and provide you with a bidding number. Please ensure that you arrive in plenty of time for the lots you are interested in as it may take a few minutes for our staff members to take your registration details. A time guide is printed at the front of this catalogue to help you with this and approximately 200 lots are sold per hour. Bidders are reminded that this is a guide only and Baldwin's cannot be held responsible if you miss your lot.
Leaving a commission/absentee bid
If you cannot attend our auctions in person we can accept commission bids that will be executed on your behalf by the auctioneer or by a member of our team against all other bidders.
The easiest way to leave a commission/Absentee bid is through www.sixbid.com. You will need to register online with them and then simply go to the lot on which you would like to bid and click on the 'Place Bid' button. This will prompt you to enter the maximum amount you would like to bid on the lot, but please be aware that the auctioneer will not automatically bid your maximum bid but will always try to purchase the lot on your behalf at the cheapest possible price.
Commission bid forms are contained in all our catalogues and are available at our retail premises in London or by contacting us on +44(0)20 7930 9808. Bids must be submitted in writing either by post, email or fax to the Baldwin offices to arrive not later than 24 hours prior to the sale. Once you have completed the form you can submit it to us by post (at the address below), by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by fax on +44(0)20 7930 9450.
Please include your full street address and a contact telephone number if you email your bids, together with details of another dealer or auction house that knows you well as a reference. In certain instances we may require a deposit to be taken from you prior to accepting absentee bids. If this is the case we will contact you as soon as possible to make further arrangements.
Baldwin's regret that they are unable to confirm receipt of faxed or emailed bids sent after 24 hours prior to the date and time of the auction.
Participants should supply their highest bid for each lot and lots will be purchased as cheaply as possible on their behalf against all competition. Absentee bidders will not be contacted prior to the auction if their top bid has been exceeded. Bidding begins below the low estimate and if yours is the only bid you will win the lot for the opening price no matter what your top bid may be. In the event of identical absentee bids, the earliest bid we receive will take priority.
Please be aware that Baldwin's will not sell any lot at less than 80% of the low estimate and this should be taken into consideration when you are leaving an absentee bid.
Bids left by telephone are left at the bidder's risk. Baldwin's will accept no responsibility for errors in the execution of bids submitted to a member of staff by telephone and we ask that such bids are confirmed in writing (by fax on +44(0)20 7930 9450 or by email at email@example.com) immediately after they are left.
Bidding online Live!
Baldwin's Auctions were the first UK numismatic auction house to offer an online bidding service in May 2006 and since then this service has grown from strength to strength. Powered by www.the-saleroom.com (sister company to the industry bible The Antiques Trade Gazette) this service is simple and easy to use. Your bids are relayed in real-time to the auctioneer who can see them as they arrive and you can follow the sale through a reassuring live audio feed.
To bid live at any of our auctions you will need to register with www.the-saleroom.com and then register for each Baldwin's auction you would like to participate in. You will be required to leave details of your credit or debit card for security reasons and agree to our Terms and Conditions of sale, which can be found on the-saleroom.com website as well as on our own website and in our catalogues. If you would like to request a hard copy of our Terms and Conditions please contact our London office. Your credit card will not automatically be charged if you are a successful purchaser, so please contact our auction department on +44(0)20 7930 9808 if you would like payment to be taken from the card details provided.
There is a facility to leave a commission/absentee bid via the-saleroom.com but please be aware that the 3% internet surcharge will be applicable and that your bids are executed by the software on your behalf. In the event of a lot opening or a bid being accepted in the room at the same amount as your top bid the room will be given priority.
In certain instances we may require a deposit to be taken from you prior to allowing you bid online with us. If this is the case we will contact you as soon as possible to make further arrangements.
the-saleroom.com have a support service available between the hours of 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday and also from around an hour before and during any live sale, regardless of the country in which the auction is being held.
Baldwin's can, at any time, before or during the auction prevent you from bidding live if we have reason to believe that your bids cannot be fulfilled.
Bidding by telephone
Bidding may be carried out by you in person or by a representative of your choice from our Baldwin's team in the auction room. If you would like to arrange for a member of our team to execute bids on your behalf please either contact our Auction Director on +44(0)20 7930 9808 or the relevant specialist directly on +44(0)20 7930 6879. Dependant on the auction there may be a minimum amount you are prepared to spend in order to book a telephone line so please contact a member of our team well in advance of the sale and they will be able to advise you of the best bidding method available for you.
Our UK auctioneers will follow the bidding pattern as it appears in the increment table below regardless of the bidding currency, although the auctioneer has the ability to alter increments at their discretion.

Full colour catalogues for all of our auctions are available with majority of the lots fully illustrated (both obverse and reverse). Great care is taken to produce the highest quality images of the lots and Baldwin's take pride in the quality of the representations contained in the catalogue. The full catalogue can also be viewed online on our own website and at www.sixbid.com and images contained herewith can be expanded using the zoom facility.
The catalogue is printed with estimates alongside each lot and the estimate is intended as a price guide for interested bidders. Although it is our opinion of the value of the lot bidders should be clear in their own minds what each lot is worth and should be prepared for prices to rise if there is competition for the lot. All lots can realise hammer prices both above and below the printed pre-sale estimate. Please note in normal circumstances, each lot is reserved at 80% of the lower estimate and bids below this are very unlikely to be accepted.
You are encouraged to view the lots before the sale and attend the auction in person if you can.
Lots for all of our UK auctions are available to view at our premises in London by appointment in the two weeks prior to the auction. To make an appointment please contact us on +44(0)20 7930 6879.
For our international sales viewing times can vary so please check our Forthcoming Auctions section on this website or contact us on +44(0)20 7930 6879 for more details.
Please be aware that an additional 21.15% buyer's premium (including VAT) will be added to the hammer price of all lots purchased through our auctions, the only exception to this being book lots which are not subject to VAT. Lots exported outside of the European Union may not be subject to VAT where A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd holds proof of export. Please ask Baldwin's for more details where this may apply to you.
Buyers Premium will vary for our joint US and Hong Kong ventures and more information can be provided upon request.
Invoices will be prepared on request during and after the auction which will indicate the total due to A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd (including postage and insurance costs). Invoices will be sent by Royal Mail to bidders approximately two days after the auction has ended but will be uploaded to each successful bidders 'My Account' space at www.baldwin.co.uk on the day after the sale. Baldwin's regret that invoices cannot be sent by email. Full prices realised will be included with each invoice posted and are available to view in the Prices Realised section of this website on the day after the auction.

All our lots are sold with an 80% of lower estimate reserve, at the auctioneer's discretion.
Please make time to read our Terms and Conditions of Sale before you bid at our auctions and be aware that by making a bid with us you are accepting these Terms and Conditions of Sale.
