Charles II (1660-85), Shilling, 1666, first bust variety bust facing right, elephant below. Rev, crowned cruciform shields, interlinked Cs in angles, Garter star at centre (ESC. 1026; Bull 507; S.3373).
Good fine, very rare, with subtle golden toning around obverse legend.
The Elephant below bust denotes the Royal African Company, in its inception referred to as the Company of Royal Adventurers trading to Africa, founded by the Duke of York in 1660. Initially set up between distinguished London Merchants and members of the Stuart Royal family, quickly establishing a de facto monopoly over English trade within West Africa.
