India General Service Medal 1854-95, one clasp, Burma 1889-92, awarded to Pte J. Powell Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry who was wounded and court martialled 5 times; (1584 Pte. J. Powell 1st Bn. D. C. L. Infy.), engraved in running script, lightly toned very fine.
Private John Powell enlisted aged 18 years old on the 29th December 1884, a Labourer from Limerick stating that he had served with the 6th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. He served, Bodmin, 8th January 1885 to 4 February 1885, Dublin, 5th February 1885 to 16th December 1885, during this [period his papers state wounded – Curragh, on the 17th December he boarded S.S. India, sailing for Malta. He served in Malta until 1890 when he sailed (name illegible) for Burma, arriving 9th January 1890 and in Mandalay on the 8th January 1891.
He was hospitalised twice more, once for Debility and once, in Burma, for Ague. He was tried and imprisoned by Court Martial an impressive 5 times for disobeying a lawful order, giving false evidence at a court martial, striking his superior officer, twice, and for wilfully allowing a fugitive to escape. His papers state he was awarded the Burma Medal with clasp1889-92 for his participation with the Wuntho Field Force.
