Description

George II (1727-60), Proof Guinea, 1727. First young laureate head left, legend GEORGIVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, toothed border around rim both sides, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, legend M.B.F.ET.H. REX. F.D.B. ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E. edge plain, weight 8.40g (WR.70 (R4), Montagu-303, Murdoch-78, Douglas-Morris-41).

Superb as struck and as such the finest known example.

Encapsulated by NGC as PF65
Finest certified by NGC.
NGC certification 2130716-021.

Although listed as R4 by Wilson and Rasmussen, we can only find one other example that has sold at auction in the last 20 years, an inferior Proof 64 realising £45,600 in 2017.

This first year pattern of the George II Guinea in real terms, when set against the current landscape of Hanoverian Gold Patterns, is perhaps far rarer than R4. An exceptional coin.
