Italy, Berengario I del Friuli (888-915), first period (early 888 – February 889), silver Denaro di stampo largo, Verona mint, cross with pellets in angles, BERNIKARIVS RIX. Rev. Temple, cross in centre, XPIASTANA RI(II)CIO; A’s unbarred on obverse, barred on reverse, normal B, 1.41g, 38mm (MIR (Milano) 14 (RRRR); CNI – , cf. V.31, 39/41, and pl. II, 5; MEC – , cf I.1013, & pp. 249-52).
Very Fine for the issue, minor rim cracks, when held to good light a slight rim separation visible in one area, however the coin is intact. Extremely rare.
Tofannin (MIR, Milano, p. 37) comments that the above coins with the name inscribed BERNIKARIVS are attributed to the Verona mint. The nearest specimens in CNI read BERNEKARIVS REX (no. 39), BIRNIKARIVS REX (no. 40) and BERENKARIVS RIX (no. 41).
