Medallions essentially fall into two categories – Commemorative Medals and Prize Medals. The former are medals that commemorate some particular event in history and may be either officially issued or privately issued – the latter covering all sorts of events, often with a political or personal slant.
Prize medals only really started in the 18th. century – firstly as simple discs engraved with the giver and recipients’ details, but then in the 19th. century as more spectacular pieces as illustrated by the Agricultural Society medals producing flamboyant prizes featuring every type of farmyard animal.
