A 1915 Hohenzollern Attack, Norfolk Regiment, Casualty 1914-15 Trio awarded to Private Frederick Henry James Stokes 12 Platoon, C Company, 7th Battalion Norfolk Regiment who was Killed in Action on the 13th of October 1915 comprising 1914-15 Star, (12646 Pte. F.H.J. Stokes, Norf. R.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (12646 Pte. F. H. J. Stokes. Norf. R.), lightly toned very fine.

Frederick Henry James Stokes was born in Bermondsey Surrey, in c. 1896he enlisted for the Norfolk Regiment on the 28th of August 1914 at St Paul’s Churchyard, London. He served Home 28th of August 1914 to the 29th of May 1915, landing in France on the 30th of May. He was posted as Missing on the 13th of October 1915 and his next of kin were notified, he was Missing on the 11th of December his Mother, Alice, had written to the War Office on the 3rd of November 1915 saying that she had heard nothing from Frederick for three weeks. He was finally confirmed Killed in Action on the 13th of October and his Mother was informed on the 14th of February 1916. He was buried at Swinburne Loop Ref map Sheet 36C Square G11. On the 13th of October the 7th Battalion had been in action for almost a week when on the 13th of October they attacked the Hohenzollern Redoubt, capturing part of Gun Trench and the south west face of the Hulluch Quarries.

Frederick’s body was not located after the War and he is now commemorated on the Loos Memorial on Panel 31, he was 19 years old when he was Killed in Action, he was the son of Mr F.G.J. and Mrs M. Stokes of 4 Manor Park Parade, High Road, Lee, London
