A Rare Salonika Theatre of Operations “Wounded and Taken Prisoner of War” 1914/15 Trio awarded to Private William Baines, 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment comprising, 1914-15 Star (19754 Pte W. Baines. Hamps: R.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (19754 Pte. W. Baines. Hamps. R.), all on 1914-15 Star Ribbons, mounted on pins, lightly toned very fine
Private William Baines, 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment landed in the Balkans on the 3rd of October 1915 The 10th Hampshire’s Sailed from Liverpool on 7 July 1915 and going via Mudros landed at Gallipoli 6 August 1915. The War Diary records that on the 6 October 1915 they landed at Salonika. Presumably Private Baines was a reinforcement for Gallipoli casualties.
There are two War Office Casualty lists. One in Jan 1916 shows him wounded and missing in Balkan theatre. And the May 1916 casualty list shows him previously reported wounded and missing, now reported POW. He appears in a Foreign Office Register as being held in Bulgaria as of July 1916 at Drenovets in Bulgaria. The only International Red Cross List he appears on shows him landing back in Dover on the 1st Dec 1918.
