A 1914-1920 British War Medal and Territorial War Medal 1914-1918 awarded to Private Reginald William Bennett, 6th Battalion The Devonshire Regiment, who served in Mesopotamia comprising, British War Medal (1506 Pte. E.W. Bennett. Devon R.), Territorial Force war Medal, (1506 Pte. R.W. Bennett Devon. R.), edge scuffs, lightly toned fine.
Reginald William Bennett was born in Newport, Barnstable, he attested for the 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment (Territorial Force) on the 29th of March 1912, aged 17 years and 1 month, an apprentice Blacksmith by trade. He was Embodied on the 5th of August 1914. The Battalion, part of the Wessex Division was ordered to India to replace Regular soldier who were returning to the Western Front and sailed from Southampton on the 9th of October arriving in Karachi on the 11th of November 1914. In January 1916 they were attached to the 36th Independent Brigade, Indian Army for service in Mesopotamia and landed at Basra on the 5th of January 1916, In September 1916 they became Tigris Lines of Communication Troops. William was Confined to barracks four times between 30th November 1914 at Lahore Fort and the 23rd of January 1918, mostly for Disobedience. He was compulsorily transferred to the Royal Engineers, Railway Troops (Blacksmith), on the 22nd of October 1918. He returned to England on the 30th of March 1919 and was Demobilised on 4th of September 1919.
