A 1st of July 1916 Casualty Medal awarded to Serjeant John Henry Charlesworth, 1st/6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment who was Killed in Action in the Battalion Attack on Gommecourt Wood comprising, 1914-1920 British War Medal, (2550 Sjt. J.H. Charlesworth. N. Staff. R.), very fine.

1/6 Battalion (TF) Attack on Gommecourt – leading waves reached enemy wire where most were shot or bombed – few men entered the front trench, but were soon killed or driven out. Casualties 305.

Serjeant John Henry Charlesworth landed in France with the 1/6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment (Territorial Force) on the 5th of March 1915 he was originally number 2550 this changing to 240476, Medal Index Card confirms. He was Killed in Action on that Saturday morning and now lies in Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers in Plot 2, Row D, Grave 10.
