A Battle of Mons, 23rd August 1914, Casualty 1914 Star Trio awarded to Private William Henry Wilson, 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, who was Killed in Action at Mons on the 23rd of August 1914 comprising: 1914 Star, copy clasp, (L-7439 Pte W.H. Wilson. 1/R. W. Kent R.), 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals (L-7439 Pte. W.H. Wilson. R.W. Kent R.), toned very fine.
Private Wilson landed in France at Le Havre on the 17th of August 1914; the Battalion moved to the village of Ghislan south-west of Mons and took up positions along the Mons/Conde canal, digging in on the canal bank, 10 feet above the surrounding ground. They came into action in the mid-morning of the 23rd of August 1914, with a hot exchange of fire at mid-day when they started to withdraw, the Germans getting to within 100 yards before they finally disengaged. Private Wilson was killed in this, the first battle of the Great War.
