Description
A Battle of Passchendaele Victory Medal Awarded to Lance Corporal Ernest Sampson, 106th Company, Machine Gun Corps who was Killed in Action on the 22nd of October 1917 comprising 1914-1919 Victory Medal, (81466 Pte. E. Sampson. M.G.C.) good, naming a little scuffed but legible.
Ernest Sampson, an Iron Founder from Gomersall, Nr Leeds enlisted at Halifax for the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment on the 10th of August 1916 stating that he was 20 years and 201 days old. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on the 28th of November 1916, Embarked at Folkestone on the 2nd of March 1917 landing at Boulogne the same day, he was posted to 106 Coy M.G.C. on the 14th of March 1917, having been promoted to Lance Corporal on the 4th of March 1917.
22nd October 1917 – The War Diary States that 106 Coy M.G.C. were to supply fire-support to 104 and 105 Infantry Brigades.
The body of Lance Corporal Ernest Sampson was noy located after the War and he is commemorated on Panels 154-159 of the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium,. He was the son of Fred Sampson of Gomersall, Nr. Leeds,
