A Bhootan operations, Long Service Pair awarded to Private Thomas Sudell 55th Regiment who served in India for 18 years and three months comprising India General Service Medal, 1854-95, one clasp, Bhootan, (1159 T. Suddell H Ms 55th Regt), note spelling of Sudell with “dd” Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, QVR, swivelling scroll suspension, (1159. Pte T. Sudell. 55th Foot) very fine

Thomas Sudell, with one “d”, was born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire he attested for the 64th Regiment at St Albans on the 26th of January 1858 stating that he was 28-year-old Labourer who had previously served in the Hertfordshire Militia. Transferring to the 74th Regiment on the 1st of February 1861, and to the 55th (Border Regimen) on the 1st of January 1864. Re-engaging whilst at Lucknow to complete 21 years’ Service. Awarded Long Service Medal with Gratuity of £5 on the 26th of January 1876. At time of Discharge, he was in possession of 5 Good Conduct Badges, had never been tried by Courts Martial and had never appeared in the Defaulters Book. He served 18 years 3 months in India never rising above the rank of Private. He was discharged on the 4th of March 1879 returning to Hatfield.
