Awarded to Serjeant, later Private James Robertson who served in the Boer War with Prince Alfred’s Volunteer Guards and in the Great War with the 4th South African Infantry comprising, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 1899-1902, 3rd type, three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, (458 Sjt. J. Robertson. Prince Alf: Vol: Gds:), impressed naming, 1914-1920 British War Medal, (Pte. J. Robertson. 4th S.A.I.), lightly toned fine
James Robertson was born in Dundee, Scotland on the 23rd of November 1876. He served with the Prince Alfred Volunteer Guard during the Boer War being discharged on the 7th of December 1900. He attested for the 1st South African Infantry for Overseas Service on the 14th of May 1918, aged 42 years. He was posted from the Reserve Battalion on the 6th of June 1918. Embarking on HMT Willochea on the 6th of September 1918 for England. It appears that he arrived in Woking on the 8th of October 1918 and promptly went on Furlough. He was posted to the BEF on the 3rd of December 1918 sailing via Southampton for France joining the 4th Battalion South African Infantry Brigade on the 17th of December 1918. He was posted back to England in March 1919 and arrived back at Cape Town on the 18th of July 1919 on HMT Polonia. He was demobilized on the 24th of August 1919 at Maitland, Cape Town. The British War Medal was dispatched to him on the 26th of June 1922, the reference in his papers to the Victory Medal has been struck through.
