Description
A Boer War Royal Engineer and Great War South African Horse and South African Service Corps Trio awarded to Corporal Jack Snape who bought himself out of the Engineers for £18 in 1903 and was awarded £9 back when he re-joined the 4th South African Horse on the 14th of January 1916 comprising, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 3rd type, two clasps, Orange Free State, South Africa 1902, 1914-1920, (4819 Spr. J. Snape. R.E.) British War and Victory Medals – South African Bi-lingual Victory Medal Reverse, (Cpl J. Snape. S.A.S.C.), contemporarily mounted for wear, heavily toned, very fine.
Jack Snape, a 19 year old Painter form Derby, joined the Royal Engineers on the 30th of January 1900, serving with the 12th Company (Field), he served Home 30th January 1900 to the 12th of February 1902, and South Africa 13th February 1902 to the 31st of January 1903, buying himself out in South Africa for £18. His papers state that he was entitled to the South Africa Medal with Orange Free State and South Africa 1902.
His papers further sate that £9 was owing to him as he had re-joined the 4th South African Horse on the 14th of January 1916 “being one half of the purchase money remitted”, the payment being sent to Cape Town on the 16th of July 1919.
