Description
A Great War Casualty pair awarded to Private Henry James Gearing, 1st Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buffs), who was Gassed at Ypres and Wounded again (Gun Shot Wound Right Upper Arm) in the Battalion Operations in September 1918 near St Quentin comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (G-25348 Pte H.J. Gearing. E. Kent R.), toned about very fine.
Henry James Gearing enlisted into the East Kent Regiment on the 8th of May 1917, aged 18 years and 1 month, a motor driver by trade. He served with the B.E.F. in France from the 1st of April 1918 to the 20th of September 1918 returning Home invalided. He was discharged from Hospital and the Army on the 1st of December 1918.
The 1st Battalion The Buffs were stationed in the Ramparts at Ypres when, on the 2nd of May 1918, the Battalion War Diary records 29 other rans wounded (gas), Henry re-joined the Battalion in “A” Company on the 7th of June 1918. On the 18th of September 1918 the 1st battalion were conducting operations near St Quentin Wood, “A” Company was attached to the 1st K.S.L.I. the advance was met by heavy Machine Gun fire from Fresnoy Cemetery, Battalion casualties for the 18th of September 1918 were 6 Officers and 150 Other Ranks Killed and wounded. Henry received a Gun Shot Wound Right Upper Arm in this attack. He was transferred to England, wounded on the 20th of September 1918.
