R. Hayes Colwell, Hexham, Northumberland

The 1st Battalion DLI fought in North Africa in 1940-41, the likely place for the award of the Mention, the 2nd Battalion DLI were virtually wiped out at Dunkirk and were reinforced before moving to Burma in 1942. The 2nd Battalion fought in the Arakan, at Kohima and were part of the 14th Army’s advance to Mandalay.
