Description
A Royal Naval Division, Anson Battalion, Battle of the Somme, Casualty, British War Medal awarded to Acting Leading Seaman William Cochrane Connelly R.N.V.R. who was Killed in Action in the attack at Beacourt on the 13th of November 1916 comprising 1914-1920 British War Medal, (C.Z. 1437 W.C. Connelly. Act. L. Se. R.N.V.R.), toned very fine.
William Cochrane Connelly was born on the 24th of May 1895, the sone of John and Minnie Connelly of 15 Dowanhill Street, Partick, Glasgow, he enlisted on the 24th of October 1914 being given the number “Clyde Z/1437”. He was posted to Benbow Battalion at Blandford on the 24th of April 1915 Transferring from Benbow to Anson Battalion on the 12th of June 1915. He was admitted to Mudros hospital on the 3rd of February 1916 being discharged on the 17th of February 1916 Embarked on H.M.T. Minnewaska at Mudros, on the 15th of May 1916 disembarking at Marseilles on the 20th of May 1916. He was promoted to Substantive Leading Seaman in the Field vice Leading Seaman Adams who was reduced to A.B. He was reported “Missing” on the 13th of November 1916 and then as Killed in Action on the 13th of November his body was buried in a Trench at map reference 1. Q.17 Cent. Sheet 57.D.40,000. His effect were returned to records on the 12th of February 1917. His body was exhumed on the 28th of January 1920 and buried in Plot 1, Row B, Grave 24 of the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel.
