At 11.45 pm on the 6th September 1915 two men belonging to H.M.S. “Leviathan” were accidentally thrown into the harbour at Halifax, the night being dark. Matthew Thomas and W. Catley both plunged in and succeeded in saving both men.
William Catley was born on the 2nd November 1882 in Stepney. He enlisted for the Royal Navy on the 2nd November 1900, on his 18th birthday.
He served aboard HMS Prosperine as a Petty Officer and received the clasp Persian Gulf 1909-1914 to his Naval General Service Medal. He was promoted to Acting Gunner 6th November 1914, Confirmed Gunner 6th November 1914 Commissioned Gunner 1st August 1924 Lieutenant (Retired) 7th April 1942. He died on the 4th December 1949.
