Abbasid, al-Mutawakkil (AH 232-247 / 847-861 AD), silver donative Dirham, struck on medallic flan, AH 246 / 860 AD, Surra man Ra’a (Samarra), 2.90g (A. 230B). Good Very Fine, light scrape on obverse. Extremely rare.

Album points out the superior calligraphy on the donative issues of al-Mutawakkil from Surra man Ra’a (Samarra), the city in which the Caliph resided throughout his reign. This Dirham was struck after al-Mutawakkil completed the world-famous Great Mosque of Samarra. Donative Dirhams are thought to have been touched by the Caliph personally.
