Description
Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, Crux type (c.991-997), Dorchester mint, moneyer Wulfnoth, inner linear circles both sides, bare headed bust left, in front trefoil tipped sceptre, legend surrounds +ÆĐELRÆD REX ΛNGLORX. Rev, short cross voided with CRVX in angles, reading +PVLFNOÐ M-O DOR, 1.35g (S.1148; N.770; BMC IIIa; SCBI 50 [Hermitage], 348-49).
A handsome example with kaleidoscopic toning, deep gold green and greys, legends legible, struck with a marginally rusty obverse die, the portrait pleasing, few eckmarks. Rev, moneyer mint inscription definitive with marginal distortion in the RV of Crux. Bold very fine or better, very rare mint for type, only a handful appearing at auction since the turn of the millennium. Much eye appeal.
