Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, Intermediate small cross/ Crux type mule (c.991-997), Winchester mint, moneyer Godwine, inner linear circles both sides, diademed headed bust left, legend surrounds +ÆĐELRÆD REX ΛNGLORX, the NG ligate. Rev, short cross voided with CRVX in angles, reading +GODPINE M-O PINT, 1.69g (S.1150/48; N.773/770; BMC IIIa/I; SCBI 7 [Copenhagen], 1368 for the mule; North note 312, p159).
A recognised rare mule in the series. Some peckmarks both sides with a few signs of metal stress striations, pleasing portrait with little weakness above the Kings head, legends predominantly legible. An adequate example of the mule on good metal. About very fine, toned, rare.
