Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, last small cross type (c.1009-17), Norwich mint, moneyer Leofwine, diademed bust left within linear circle, legend surrounds, +ÆÐELRED REX ANG, the NG ligatured. Rev, small cross pattee within linear circle with legend surrounding, +LEOFPINE ON NORÐPI, weight 1.33g (S.1154; N.777; SCBI 26 [East Anglia], 1216).

Toned and set out on a broad flan, legends clear in the main some wear in the die, the portrait and drapery bars well struck. Rev, somewhat off centre with few peck marks, mint reading comprehensive and definitive. Bold very fine, the portrait better. Much eye appeal, fastened to an excellent provenance trail.
