Description
Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, Long cross type (c.997-1003), London mint, moneyer Eadwold, bare headed bust left, pellet behind, legend commences from bottom left +ÆĐELRÆD REX ΛNGL, ng ligate. Rev, long voided cross with tri-crescent terminals, pellet at centre, reads +EΛDPOLD MO LVND, 1.64g (S.1151; N.774; BMC IVa; SCBI 1 [Cambridge], 700).
A fully rounded specimen with bronze amber toning struck with partially rusty dies. Portrait well established with excellent details in both hair and drapery, clear legend inscription, superb. Rev, few peckmarks and some clashing within the moneyer mint script. Bold good very fine, fetching.
