Description
Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, Small Crux type (c.995-997) Canterbury mint, moneyer Leofric, inner linear circles both sides, bare headed bust left, fleured sceptre cutting into the drapery, struck on a smaller module flan, legend surrounds +ÆĐELRÆD REX ΛNGLOX. Rev, short cross voided with CRVX in angles, additional pellets behind the C and R, reading +LEOFRIC MONE CANT, the NT ligate, 1.39g (S.1149; N.770 var; BMC IIIa; SCBI 7 [Copenhagen], 81: note fleured sceptre).
Lightly toned, under closer inspection very well detailed in the portrait, few peckmarks, small unobtrusive striking crack only visible when held to good light. Rev, concise moneyer mint inscription, the usual peckmarks. Good very fine, extremely rare with a fleured sceptre.
