Africa General Service Medal, for Somaliland 1908-10 who subsequently served during the Great War on the “Q” Ship Sweet Briar awarded to Able Seaman Arthur Northcott, H.M.S. Arthur Northcott was born in Lewisham, London on the 11th of June 1877, he joined the Metropolitan Asylums Board Training Ship Exmouth in December 1900 being Discharged in October 1902. He joined the Royal Navy on the 11th of June 1905 stating that he was an 18-year-old Footman. He served on H.M.S. Hyacinth from the 27th of March 1909 to the 2nd of June 1911 and may have been, therefore, present at the “Dubai incident of December 1910”. In 1913 he was awarded 21 days Detention for Smuggling. During the Great War he served aboard His Majesty’s Sloop Sweet Briar, from November 1917 to June 1918, a “Q” serving with the Grand Fleet or in the Mediterranean. He was Demobilised to Shore on the 9th of August 1919.
