Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Helmet type (c.1024-1030), Rochester mint, moneyer Godwine, pointed helmet bust left with sceptre in front, legend surrounding, CNV T RECX. Rev, short voided cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, reads GODPINE ON ROFD, 0.92g (S.1158; N.787; BMC XIV).

Struck on a full flan, slight porosity, weakly struck section in helmet reflected on the reverse, and what looks to be blocked or clashed dies at 9 o’ clock.
