Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Helmet type (c.1024-1030), Rochester mint, moneyer Godwine, pointed helmet bust left with sceptre in front, legend surrounding, CNV T RECX. Rev, short voided cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, reads GODPINE ON ROFD, 0.92g (S.1158; N.787; BMC XIV).

Struck on a full flan, slight porosity, weakly struck section in helmet reflected on the reverse, and what looks to be blocked or clashed dies at 9 o’ clock. Reverse, mottled or uneven toning, clear moneyer and mint legend inscription, very rare mint for type, seldom appearing at auction or in dealers trays. Obverse good fine, reverse very fine, an academic example.
