Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Helmet type (c.1024-1030), Southwark mint, moneyer Ælfgar, pointed helmet bust left with sceptre in front, legend surrounding at 1 o’clock, CNVT RECXΛ•. Rev, short voided cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, reads +ÆLFGΛR ONN SVÐ, 0.91g (S.1158; N.787; BMC XIV; SCBI 15 [Copenhagen, Part IIIc], 3687-94).
Granite grey light toning, free from peckmarks ever so slightly soft in the strike. Portrait a little doubled, legends legible both sides. Very fine, with subtle mint lustre. An academic representation of the type.
