Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Helmet type (c.1024-1030), Thetford mint, moneyer Wineman, pointed helmet bust left with sceptre in front, legend surrounding at 1 o’clock, CNVT: RECXΛ. Rev, short voided cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, reads +PINEMΛN ONN ÐEO, 1.03g (S.1158; N.787; BMC XIV; SCBI 15 [Copenhagen, Part IIIc] 3864-9).
Struck with a rusty obverse die, clear portrait noticeably well detailed around the drapery, some die breaks, legible legends. Reverse, precise and definitive script with a few light surface markings. Good very fine, reverse impressive. Lightly toned with amber underlying lustre.
