Canute (1016-35), Penny, Quatrefoil type (c.1017-1023), Colchester mint, moneyer Aelfwine, crowned and draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend commences at 9 o’clock, +CNVT REX ΛNGLO. Rev, long voided cross over quatrefoil with pellet cusps and pellet centre, additional pellet in third quarter, reads +ÆLFPINE ON COLEO, 0.89g (S.1157; N.781; BMC VIII; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen Part IIIa], 247).
A fully centred strike on good metal, free from any peckmarks, obverse double struck, particularly in the portrait, some discolouration in the southern region. Legends interpretable, more so on the reverse,. Very fine, an academic example. A notably scarcer mint town for the type.
