Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Quatrefoil type (c.1017-1023), London mint, moneyer Eadmund, crowned draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend commences at 11 o’clock, +CNVT REX ΛNGLOX. Rev, long voided cross over quatrefoil with pellet cusps and pellet centre, reads +EΛDMVND O LVND, the ND ligate in moneyers name, 0.91g (S.1157; N.781; BMC VIII; SCBI 14 [Copenhagen], 2307-08).
A full centred strike with pleasing olive steel grey tone, portrait strong with clear legends, lozenge style countermark in front of portrait. Rev, clear fields with a well embossed quatrefoil, free from peckmarks. Near extremely fine with an illustrious provenance.
