Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Quatrefoil type (c.1017-23), Lincoln mint, moneyer Sumerlede, diademed and draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend surrounds +CNVT REX ΛNGLORVMI. Rev, long voided cross over quatrefoil with pellet cusps and pellet centre, reads +SVMERLEĐ MO LIN, 0.98g (S.1157; N.781; BMC VIII; Mossop 2, plate XXXIX; Blackburn & Lyon, Lincoln M, middle style dies).
Lightly toned, intelligible legends with a pleasing portrait, cross behind bust variation clear. A little softness in portrait, free of peckmarks or nicks. Very fine, scarce, an intriguing variant.
As is the case with certain Quatrefoil Pennies, a number of symbols appear in the obverse and reverse
fields (cross, sceptre, pellets et cetera) often associated with specific moneyers, this becomes apparent
mainly in Lincoln, Thetford, London. [see: p.236 ‘Regional and die production in Cnut Quatrefoil Issue’
Blackburn and Lyon].
