Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Quatrefoil type (c.1017-1023), Hertford mint, moneyer Wulfric, London C/ middle dies, crowned and draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend commences at 9 o’clock, +CNVT REX ΛNGLO. Rev, long voided cross over quatrefoil with pellet cusps and pellet centre, additional pellets in 2nd and 3rd quarters, reads +PVLFRIC ON HEORET.:, 0.82g (S.1157; N.781; BMC VIII; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen Part IIIa], 1224-28).

Pleasant cabinet tone, an ample example despite some encrustations and deposits. Nevertheless, a clear depiction of the type and mint, obverse softly struck, reverse better. Legends in the main legible, about very fine in a heavily collected and lesser seen mint for type.
