Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), Canterbury Mint, moneyer Leofwine, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +LEOFPINE ON CENT, 1.18g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 2 [Hunterian], 930).

A fully centred strike with original mint brilliance permeating the surfaces, legends precise and definitive with no areas of distortion or fade. Portrait impressive, the pellet fasteners to the tunic and drapery bars all well embossed, as is the sceptre. Rev, legends legible and crisp, struck from fresh dies. Extremely fine, much as struck.
