Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), Lincoln Mint, moneyer Harthacnut, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT REX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +CNVT ON LINCOCL, 1.17g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; Mossop 22-26, Plate LI).
Dark rich toning, portrait comprehensive as are the legends both sides, some softness in the short cross. The moneyer rare, seldom appearing on the short cross type for Lincoln. Very fine, rare.

Mossop and later Dr Veronica S Smart reference and cite only 5 or so examples for the moneyer Harthacnut on the Short Cross
type of Canute, with 4 known dies. Two dies for the moneyer signature in its full representation of either HÆRĐECNVT and
HERĐECNVT with two further dies of almost certainly the same moneyer in the form of CNVT, as is the case with our example
above. The same obverse die is utilised for all of the above reverse variants.
