Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, short cross type (c.1029-35), Thetford mint, moneyer Aelfwold, diademed bust left with sceptre, legend surrounding CNVT RECX. Rev, pellet in annulet at centre of voided short cross, linear circles and legend surrounding, +ΛLFPOLD ON ÐEO, 1.16g (S.1159; N.790; SCBI 15 [Copenhagen], 3786; BMC type XVI).
An excellent example with no real areas of weakness, free from peckmarks and scratches, outer beaded borders visible. Legends both sides precise and immediately legible, toned with some of the original gold bloom around the periphery. Portrait cleanly cut, all the pellets to the tunic defined with clear striations in the Kings hair, complimented by clear fields, few reverse die breaks. Extremely fine with a good pedigree.
