Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), Canterbury Mint, moneyer Wulfwig, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT• RECX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +PVLFPIG ON CENT, the LF ligate in moneyers name, 0.89g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen, Part IIIa], 206).
A classic example of being struck with rusty dies, common for the series. Nicely defined portrait, some flatness in King’s face, legends legible, few unobtrusive encrustations near the rims. Brightly toned with hints of lustre. Good very fine, fully centred strike on good metal.
