Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), Canterbury Mint, moneyer Brihtred, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECX: Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +BRIHTRED ON CEN, 0.88g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen, Part IIIa], 132-37).

A fully centred strike, well proportioned, classic flint grey toning with hints of mint lustre. Portrait and legends on both sides comprehensible, free from peckmarks, a die break between sceptre and portrait. Some sporadic verdigris on obverse, on reverse concentrated between 3 and 6 o’clock. An academic example, very fine in the strike. Priced accordingly.
