Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), Dover Mint, moneyer Eadsige, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +ETSIGE ONN DOFR, 0.88g (S.1159; N.790 var; BMC XVI; SCBI 1 [Fitzwilliam], 786; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen, Part IIIa] 364-73).

A well struck example with partially worn dies, sound portrait especially well detailed in the lower bars of the drapery and pellet fasteners. Legends generally legible, few unobtrusive encrustations. Free from peckmarks with a bright attractive tone. Very fine, in a popular mint town.
