Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), London Mint, moneyer Leofstan, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +LEOFSTΛN ON LVN, 1.04g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 14 [Copenhagen, Part IIIb], 2753-56).

Slight off centre strike, light steel grey toning with underlying gold and amber. Comprehensive portrait with impressive detail to the lower draper bars and pellet fasteners, die flaw running to King’s nose from southern point of flan, sceptre bold, free from peckmarks, struck with a marginally worn die. Reverse, executed with a rusty die, noticeably granulated, nevertheless, moneyer and mint script clear. Good very fine.
