Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), York Mint, moneyer Crucan, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECXΛ. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +CRVCΛN ON EOFE:, 1.10g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 9 [Ashmoleon], 732; SCBI [Copenhagen, Part IIIa], 590-604, various mint signatures).
Evenly distributed cabinet tone, a fusion of mid colour grey with light gold, containing much of its original mint brilliance. Free from peckmarks, on round flan, a little rub on the lowest point of bust. Reverse, excellent, die break in the second quarter of short cross, slightly flat to the western most tip of rim. Portrait comprehensive, legends clear, slightly soft in the initial strike. Bold good very fine, reverse better.
