Description

Canute (1016-35), Penny, Helmet type (1024-30), Gloucester mint, moneyer Godric, helmeted bust left with sceptre, legend surrounding commencing at top, CNV T RE•C•X:, the V with a pellet base. Rev, pellet in double annulet at centre of voided short cross, broken annulet enclosing pellet in each angle, legend surrounding, +GODR•IC ON GL•EP, 1.05g (S.1158; N.787; SCBI 13 [Copenhagen] 1022; Bruun 267). Light dark amber cabinet toning, under closer inspection particularly well struck up in both the portrait and legends, free from any peckmarks or soft spots. Rev, lighter tone with definitive legends, a good clean strike. About extremely fine, with the reverse executed particularly well, a pleasing example of the Gloucester mint coinage. Rare.

Purchased from A. H. Baldwin January 2020, ex vault stock. Subsequently bought back privately for commerce in 2023.
