Description
Charles I (1625-1649), silver Halfcrown, Oxford Mint, 1646, King on horseback left with raised sword and short sash, rocky ground with coarse grass below, Oxford plume behind, mint mark plume rev declaration in two lines, three Oxford plumes above, date below and OX in two lines below, initial mark five pellets, 14.32g (Bull 631/1 (Ox.2-14-1c); Brooker 918; N.2436; S.2960).
Irregular shape as usual for this issue, quite a flat strike on horseman, though head of horse clearer, as it was struck with a pleasant tone, very fine for issue and better than most of examples cited in Bull provenances of which this piece is not listed and is perhaps better than the Lockett piece illustrated.
