Description
[Charles II], The Four Days Battle, naval action with the Dutch, silver medal, 1666, by Christoffel Adolfszoon, a naval engagement, in foreground, a dismasted ship on fire, small boat alongside, in ex. PVGNANDO (as on the reverse of the previous lot), rev. legend in 13 lines within a border of linked shields of the 7 provinces, interlinked with fasces, MNEMOSYNON SPECTANDÆ VICTORIÆ ET VIRTVS BATAVÆ CLASSE BRITANNICA…, 69mm. (MI.518/164, pl. LI, 3; vL.II, 524), certified and graded by NGC as Uncirculated Details, Tooled, a contemporary cast of excellent quality of the extremely rare struck medal.
The rarity of the medal, especially in commerce, cannot be over-emphasised. Montagu [1897] had an example (lot 314, sold with another Dutch medal for £4/5/-); There was no example in Murdoch, or in Milford Haven’s Foreign Medals, Sotheby’s 21 November 1919.
