China War Medal 1900, one clasp, Relief of Pekin, awarded to Private John Senior, 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, (4466 Pte J. Senior. 2nd Rl: Welsh Fus:), impressed naming, extremely fine.
John Senior was born in the Parish of Newtown, in the County of Glamorgan, Wales in 1873, he enlisted in Cardiff for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the 15th October 1894, giving his age as 21 years and 11 months, stating that he was a Labourer by trade.
After 2 month’s at the Depot he was posted on the 7th of January 1895 to the 2nd Battalion. He served Home 15th of October 1984 to 7th of July 1896, Malta 8th of July 1896 to the 5th of April 1897, Crete 6th of April 1897 to the 2nd of August 1898, Egypt the 3rd of August 1898 to the 10th of September 1898, Crete from the 11th of September 1898 to the 13th of December 1898, China 14th of December 1898 to the 25th of December 1902 returning Home on the 26th of December 1902, he was Transferred to the Reserve on the 18th of January 1903 and Discharged on termination of 1st Period of Engagement on the 14th October 1906 having served 14 years, 10 months and 6 days. However this was reduced by 3 years 269 days as Forfited Service His papers record three instances where he Forfeited his Good Conduct pay.
His papers state that he attained a 3rd Class Certificate of Education on the 24th of December 1894 and that he was present at the Occupation of Crete in 1897 and China 1900. His papers confirm the award of the China 1900 medal with clasp Relief of Pekin, his only medal entitlement.
