Description
Cnut (1016-1035), silver Penny, quatrefoil type, London Mint, Moneyer Osulf, crowned and draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend commences at lower left, +CNVT REX ANGLORV, outer beaded circle surrounding both sides, rev long voided cross with pellet centre and tri-crescent terminals, over quatrefoil with pellet on each cusp, +OS VLF ONLV NDE, N and L ligatured, 0.97g (BMC type VIII; N.781; S.1157).
Toned, extremely fine, a superb coin.
This coin struck from dies of the late class C “London” style as defined by Blackburn and Lyon in their article “Regional Die-Production in Cnut’s Quatrefoil Issue” chapter 13 of Anglo-Saxon Monetary History. These dies therefore cut at London and supplied for use to strike coinage in London.
